The circuit was inaugurated in 1951 using the layout of a pre-existent horse race-course with sand surface anti-clockwise direction. In 1957 the track was paved and in 1963 the 3.2km International circuit was inaugurated with a non-championship Formula 1 race. In 1970 paddock, grandstands and news facilities were built; the direction became clockwise. In 2005 the circuit was further extended to 4km.
